Here are Three Keys to Solve Oily Skin
Oily skin is one of the hardest skin types to take care of, but don't despair if you have it, because it is also one of the most resistant to aging. Here are THREE key principles Adelline thinks is a way to take care of your oily skin.
1. Is your cleanser helping your oily skin? Do you need a better cleanser?
Oily skin types have pores that produce more sebum unless these pores are well cleaned out every day, they can easily become blocked up, cause acne, become enlarged, colored, and any number of annoying things. That is why the first rule of skincare for oily skin is cleanse and double cleanse your whole face.
Because frequent cleansing can be rough on your skin balance, it's important to choose your cleansers, toners, and emulsions carefully. However, it is NOT a good idea to skip washing because you feel clean or your skin feels overstimulated! Choosing a good cleanser is the first key to oily skin control.
2. Are you constantly breaking out? You aren’t exfoliating enough.
Having clear pores is the best way to keep your sebum clear, and if your sebum is clear, oily skin can be a blessing, especially in cold dry weather. In order to keep your pores clear, however, you need to put in some work. A good AHA exfoliator can be effective, but if you have too much oil production, a good BHA exfoliator can help. Regardless, remember to exfoliate once or twice a week.
Combining exfoliation with steamed towels or good peeling pads can be a little more time-consuming, but you might like the way you feel afterward! Be sure to remember: Let your pores cool down after exfoliation and limit your sessions to once or twice a week. Pores can become enlarged with too much stimulation, so choosing a good exfoliation routine is the second key to take care of your oily skin.
3. Does your skin feel oily? Not moist enough? You need a better moisturizer.
Keep your skincare and makeup routine minimalist. Anything that stays on your skin for too long is something for pollutants to stick to and irritate your skin. Thick makeup, oily emulsions, and heavy creams are best avoided. Avoid minty & citrusy products (menthol, eucalyptus, mint, etc), as the "fresh" feeling they leave on your skin can actually be harmful to oily skin types. Try to minimize your routine to the very basics.
The cornerstone of skincare is moisturizing. Instead of using a thick cream or emulsion, find good water-based essence or moisturizer. You might need to try several products before you find something that does not cause you to break out. Because a good moisturizer is the basis of all skincare, in order to minimize your routine, the third key to caring for oily skin is finding a good, sensitive moisturizer.
